Four weeks plus one day pregnant today.
Would love to get an ultrasound, but I'd be lucky to see the gestational sac at this point. It is just so early in the process. Of course I'm nervous, and asking many questions like.....will I have another spontaneous abortion (see below for definition)? Honestly, every time I go to the bathroom, I'm worried I might see blood. Since I've had two first trimester miscarriages in the past, I know how hard they are and I hope to not go through that again. Only time will tell.
Since I intend to make this educational, here is a definition you may be wondering about...
Spontaneous abortion: aka miscarriage, is the loss of a recognized pregnancy prior to the 20th week of gestation. This is incredibly common! Based on studies, it is estimated that anywhere from 8% to 26% of pregnancies end due to spontaneous abortion. And, this number may be even higher as many woman may miscarry before they know they are pregnant. Most spontaneous miscarriages occur because of genetic or structural problems that are incompatible with life. There are risk factors, which include a history of miscarriage, age greater than 35 and maternal smoking.

Pregnant!
Had a positive pregnancy test today.
I'm excited but I'm trying not to get too attached yet as I have previously had two miscarriages. I'm only 3 weeks and 5 days, so it is extremely early. I'm a doctor and I know the statistics.
So, we will see what happens. Fingers crossed.
If this pregnancy continues, I plan to discuss healthy pregnancy tips and document the changes I make in my life to have a healthier, more natural pregnancy.

Are you concerned about exposure to pesticides in food? I know I am. The Environmental Working Group is an excellent resource for making good choices at the supermarket. The put out a Shopper's Guide and list the "Dirty Dozen" and the "Clean 15." The Dirty Dozen is a list of 12 fruits and vegetables that contain the highest amount of pesticides. Whenever possible it is a good idea to buy the organically grown fruits and veggies on this list.
The top 5 on the Dirty Dozen list include:
1. Apples
2. Celery
3. Sweet bell peppers
4. Peaches
5. Strawberries.
On the other hand, they have a list of the "Clean 15." These fruits and veggies contain the lowest amount of pesticides. If you are on a budget (like most of us) then you can buy these conventionally grown.
The top 5 on the Clean 15 list include:
1. Onions
2. Sweet corn
3. Pineapples
4. Avocados
5. Cabbage
Also, you can download an app to your phone so that you can easily access the lists while shopping!

It begins....
I'm a mom.
I'm a wife-to-be.
I'm a doctor.
I try to be a positive thinker. But, let's face it......I'm in the worst shape of my life. I'm not very nice to my body. I get winded just going up a couple flights of stairs. And, I'm too young to be this way. And, so are you. We all have too much to do in life to be overweight, out of shape and unhealthy. It's a bad combination. I want to be a good role model for my daughter. I want to be a good role model for my patients. I feel like someone should give me a firm slap in the face every time I tell my patients to exercise for at least 30 minutes 5 times per week. If I can't seem to figure out how to get it done, then how can I expect my patients to do the same?
So here it is. I've joined the blogging world. In part to make me a bit more accountable to making some lifestyle changes. In part to help others along their way to being a healthier person. It will hopefully help make me a better doctor, a better mom, a better partner and a little kinder to my body.
